Hi Pam, Jim Dlugosinski here...I am so sorry to hear about Carl's passing. I don't think I can remember a single time at WFHR that Carl was ever in a bad mood or didn't have a great (ok, terrible!) joke to share! He was a genuinely nice fellow, and I will always remember him fondly.
All the best to you and your family,
JimmyD

I got to know Carl for only short periods of time throughout my day while giving weather forecasts for WFHR in Wisconsin Rapids. Though I only got to speak with him and James for a couple minutes each morning, WFHR quickly became my favorite radio station to talk to every day, and Carl's presence was a big reason for that. The chemistry between Carl and James on the morning show was unmatched. All of us enjoyed not just talking about the weather, but also about soccer.
Almost every morning, we would briefly discuss what was going on with my favorite soccer team, Tottenham Hotspur. There would be some mornings where we discussed more about soccer than the weather. It was something I looked forward to each morning. After every call was finished, Carl always signed off saying "Go Tottenham!" before I hung up the phone. I'm really going to miss him on the morning show, but I still think about Carl any time I call in to WFHR.
Although I never got to meet Carl in person, I was thankful to get to know at least a part of him whenever I called WFHR. He will be deeply missed.

It was a pleasure to work with Carl in the WFHR News Department during the decade we now call the 1990s. He trusted my news judgment and I trusted his. He rarely rewrote my news reports, read them accurately, and pronounced most of the words correctly. When it was my turn at the microphone to read his stories, I tried my best to be as professional in my delivery as he was. On the rare occasion that I messed up, he never complained.
When Carl would take a vacation to play golf down south, I was happy to work his shift AND mine. After all, it was just a solid week or two of 16 to 20 hours a day until he got back home, all smiling, tanned and refreshed. I never complained because he was probably one of the best News Directors I ever worked with and he deserved the break. Besides, I knew, because we were a two-person news team he would be the one working two shifts a day while I was enjoying MY vacation.
Carl Hilke and I got along very well, during those ten years together at WFHR, because we respected each other, and shared the common goal of providing accurate news to our listeners, back when it was not a novelty to be a Real News Team, doing Real, Truthful, News Reports. I was proud to work with Carl. - Gary W. Morgan, Wisconsin Rapids, WI USA.

Carl was a predictably kind human being. The world needs more like him. When interviewing on air he worked seamlessly to make the people being interviewed sound good. Thank you God for Carl.
