A very important man has died. You may not have known him, in fact, the chances are that you have never heard of him. You may have never had the pleasure of his wit and good humor.  You may have never heard the tenor of his uproarious laughter at the little things you may have missed. You may have never encountered his infectious, almost childlike, optimism. You may have never met the beautiful children he left behind, each one a crazy offshoot of the very things he embodied: Benny, the funny man, a part of Dwight that illuminates the absurdity of life while creating a moment that makes us ponder the humor in things that might otherwise go unnoticed; Andrew, the intellectual, a part of Dwight that, much like an encyclopedia, contains information, but, unlike an encyclopedia, dispenses it whether we want to hear it or not; Sarah, earthy and compassionate, she embodies a side of Dwight that would trickle out during positive moments of contemplative discourse, so often tapped at late night fires; Jackie, the side of Dwight that honors traditions, while always remaining amenable to the chaos of change; Mathew, the philosopher and seeker, this side of Dwight was easy to see. It was evident in the way he approached every moment with curiosity, the thrill of discovery and understanding, its own reward; Dan, the man…yeah, at first you may think he embodies the salesman, accountant, entrepreneurial side of which Dwight’s every day was full of, and that he does, but much like Dwight, there is more to his story; and Tina, who seems to exhibit all of the previous attributes, along with an infectious optimism, that was so typical of Dwight. I am at a loss. I weep for anyone who has been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to call Dwight: friend, family, or even, maybe, foe…..for your life has just become just a little less lively. You see, a very important man has died, and I weep for myself, for his children, and for his lovely wife, Ann. We are all better off for having known him and we will be at a loss with his passing. We love you Dwight, thank you for being part of our lives…you will be missed. The author is Randall Inhoff.
