Obituary of Carlos Funmaker

Carlos “Nii Hamani” Funmaker, age 82, of Wisconsin Rapids, passed Saturday, September 23, 2017 at his residence surrounded by his family.

Visitation will be from 12:00 P.M. until 3:00 P.M. on Monday, September 25, at Chakh-hah-Chee Community Building in Port Edwards, WI, followed by Native American Church Services. Marlin “Hoonch” White Eagle will officiate.  Commitment services will be at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday,September 26, also at Chakh-hah-Chee.  Burial with military honors will be at 3:00 P.M. on Tuesday at the Trempealeau Public Cemetery in Trempealeau, WI.

Carlos was born May 4, 1935 in Lacrosse, WI to Andrew and Lucy (Little Bear) Funmaker. He proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1957-1963.

Carlos worked as a painter, then later became a security guard at Rainbow Casino in Nekoosa.

Carlos enjoyed golfing, bowling and shooting pool.  He was especially proud of his hole in one that he got at Homestead Golf Course.  He played many sports and was best known for playing basketball. The Funmaker family had their own basketball team that played in Native tournaments.  He liked to deer hunt and duck hunt in his younger years.  In later years, Carlos enjoyed bingo and going to the casino. He was a sports fan and liked watching Packer, Brewer and Badger games.  Carlos was a proud member of the Ho-Chunk Nation Bear Clan.  He was a lifelong member of the Native American Church.  He was known for being meticulous about how he looked and the way he dressed.

Carlos is survived by three daughters: Michelle Funmaker, Dawn Funmaker and Toni Funmaker; sister: Betty LaMere; brothers: Lorenzo Perry Funmaker (aka Eugene Buffalo Head) and Maynard Bradford Funmaker Sr.; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many other relatives.  He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers and sisters: Bert, Myron, Nathaniel, Roger, Wayne, Wilfred, Conrad, Thurman, Darrell, Ricardo, Justine, Anita, Carol and Darlene.
