Obituary of Garrett James O'Neil

Garrett James O’Neil, age 22, of Wisconsin Rapids, passed away unexpectedly on July 6, 2017 at Aspirus Riverview Hospital in Wisconsin Rapids.

Services will be at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at Herman-Taylor Funeral Home in Wisconsin Rapids.  Rev. Doug Schalow will officiate.  Family and friends are invited to attend Garrett’s Life Celebration from 3:00 – 8:00 P.M. on Tuesday, July 11 and from 10:00 A.M. until the time of services on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Garrett James O’Neil was born September 30, 1994 in Wisconsin Rapids to Robert O’Neil and Karmen Kelly.  He attended Wisconsin Rapids Public Schools and graduated in 2013.

Garrett was extremely athletic and participated in many sports from a young age.  He played youth football with the Wisconsin Rapids Raptors and went on to be a starter for the Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln Raiders football and basketball teams.

After high school, Garrett worked for several area businesses.  He was currently a student a Mid-State Technical College where he planned to pursue a degree in either criminal justice or forestry.

Garrett enjoyed being outdoors whether he was fishing, hunting, cutting wood, or just relaxing on the tailgate of his pickup.  He was a physical fitness fanatic and loved working out.  His greatest love was spending time with family and friends sitting around a campfire, just hanging out, or having a “Bro-Day” with his little brothers.  Garrett was an avid fan of all sports, college and pro.  If the game was on, he was watching it, especially if he was rooting on the Packers, Badgers or Brewers.   Garrett will be remembered for his outgoing personality, free spirit and unique sense of humor.

Garrett is survived by his father, Robert (Vicki) O’Neil of Madison; mother, Karmen Kelly (Dan Karl) of Wisconsin Rapids; brothers: Gavin O’Neil of Madison and Brandon and Tyler Gear of Wisconsin Rapids; step-brothers: Jason, Eric and Cody Pavloski of Wisconsin Rapids; step-sister, Christine (Nick) Schorr of Maplewood, MN; grandparents: Pat and Judie Kelly of Vesper, Barb (Dennis) Wick of Madison, and Robert O’Neil Sr. of Deerfield, WI; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and nieces.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial for Garrett will be established at a later date.
