Obituary of M. Louise Engelman
M. Louise Engelman, age 97, of Wisconsin Rapids, died Monday, January 2, 2017 at Strawberry Lane Medical Center from complications related to a fall.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 pm on Saturday, January 7 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Wisconsin Rapids. Pastor John Grohs will officiate. Burial will be at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday at the Church from 12:30 pm until the time of the services. Herman-Taylor Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Louise was born on April 24, 1919 in the Town of Hiles to Joseph and Louisa (Patek) Urban. After she graduated from Pittsville High School in 1937 and the Wood County Normal Teachers College in 1939, she taught in several one-room elementary schools in Wood County. She later worked at J. C. Penney and DeByle stores.
She married Eldon E. Engelman on October 11, 1945 at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Nekoosa. They celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary in October 2014.
Louise loved to read, take pictures, play bridge and tend her flower gardens. She spent her life caring for her family members and encouraging them, by example, to continue learning by reading, education, and especially travel. Louise enjoyed her family travel adventures and shared her experiences with others in her many journals and photo albums.
She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, the Lowell Senior Center, League of Women Voters and the Retired Teachers Association.
Louise is survived by her daughters, Patricia, Wisconsin Rapids and Sandra (Wayne) Schild, Barrington IL; grandchildren, Kristin (Seth) Campbell, Hanover NH, and Colin (Anna) Schild, Hopkins MN; a sister, Jeanne (Milden) Schwanebeck, Pittsville; sisters-in-law, Kathleen Urban and Irene Engelman, Pittsville, Margie Urban and Mae Kester, Wisconsin Rapids and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eldon; parents, siblings, Anne (Elmer) Garrels, Joseph (Manette), Edward, Ellen (Robert) Karloske, James and brother-in-law, Robert Engelman.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Opportunity Development Center or the charity of your choice.
