I was lucky enough to grow up with many uncles around, but "Uncle Jack" was always one of my favorites. I think I tried Brandy in college because I knew that was what you were supposed to drink in Wisconsin, thanks to Jack and Gert. I cannot walk past the grocery store 'peanut aisle' without thinking of Jack's ever-present can of nuts. But most of all, I remember the feeling I got whenever I was in Wisconsin Rapids. The Raprager home felt like what I hoped to have when I grew up: warm, comfortable, a nice view, pine trees, bird feeders, a garden with raspberries, somewhere you could hit golf balls, and, most important, a place that was always full of love and laughter. It took a while, but I have almost all of those things now! THANKS Uncle Jack. I will miss you.

John was my Great Uncle, "Uncle Jack." Some of my earliest childhood memories involve running around their house with my cousins Jenny and Lisa. He was a fixture in the living room, drink in hand and a bowl of Planters party peanuts. Recently, I had business in Rapids and Uncle Jack opened his house to me, where I stayed for two weeks when I wasn't working. Each evening, we would do yard work, have dinner, and watch television together. His bird would perch on his hat (the bill of which was covered in bird crap), watch Jack do Sudoku puzzles, and mimic the clinking of ice in Jack's drink.
He told me several times that he missed my Aunt Gert and that he was ready to pass on. He was neither morbid nor depressed. He was just ready.
The last time I spoke with him was on his 97th birthday. I wished him well and told him I would visit him soon. I'm annoyed with myself that I missed another opportunity to spend time with him. However, I'm so grateful that we had the time together that we did.
I love you Uncle Jack. Thank you for being such a positive example of how to live life. We will talk about you and remember you for the rest of our lives. I will hear that laugh of yours for years to come.
