Obituary of Desmond Mike

Desmond Verlyn Mike ?Ce Sgaga?, 57, of Cranmoor, died Thursday, April 18, 2013 at Riverview Hospital in Wisconsin Rapids. Native American funeral services will be at 12:00 Noon on Saturday, April 20th at the residence located at 6188 State Highway 54 West, Wisconsin Rapids. Clayton Winneshiek will officiate. Burial will be in Dells Dam Cemetery, Levis Township, Clark County. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services on Saturday at the residence. Desmond was born October 5, 1955 in Wisconsin Rapids to Thomas and Pauline (Winneshiek) Mike. He graduated from John Edwards High School in Port Edwards and went on to MSTC where he took some courses in mechanics. He was a member of the Ho-Chunk Nation Traditional Court and worked in maintenance at the Ho-Chunk Community Building and security at Rainbow Casino. He was previously employed as an assistant manager for Northland Cranberry and worked for Potter?s Cranberry Marsh. Desmond was an avid outdoorsman who loved trapping, hunting, fishing, and collecting traps. He also had a love for Harley Davidson Motorcycles and enjoyed riding his knucklehead. Desmond was a craftsman who liked making Native American arts and crafts. He was a devoted Green Bay Packer fan and enjoyed gambling. He had a special love for his grandchildren and enjoyed visiting and conversing with relatives and friends. Desmond always had a smile, enjoyed teasing, and was a jokester who called everyone ?Goof?. He is survived by his son, Derris (Brianna) Funmaker; three daughters, Lavonne Smith, Monica Funmaker, and Carleen Funmaker; five grandchildren; four sisters: Judy Buffalo, Ernestine (Michael) Helgesen, Clarice Jackson, and Loylee Mike; a brother, Owen Mike; and many nieces and nephews and other grandchildren, including his nephew, Casey Mike, who he was particularly fond of. He was preceded in death by his parents, his grandparents: John and Kate (White Otter) Mike and Clayton and Kate (Funmaker) Winneshiek; and Kunu Armond, Hena Wilfred Lymon, and Naxi Clayton Leland. Herman-Taylor Funeral Home and Cremation Center of Wisconsin Rapids is assisting the family.
