Obituary of John Robert Howard

John Robert Howard, age 74, passed away on Thursday, December 10, 2015 at Strawberry Lane Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Wisconsin Rapids. John was born in Wisconsin Rapids on January 26, 1941 to Orbery and Margaret (Gross) Howard. After high school John moved to San Leandro, CA with his first wife, that marriage ended in divorce. John served his country as a member of the United States Army and was stationed in Korea from 1963 to 1965. John married Toni Lee Oberhuber on December 30, 1973. He was employed by AT&T as an assembly worker in San Leandro, CA from 1961 until his retirement in 1990. After retirement John returned to Wisconsin Rapids to be closer to his family. John was a very social person who truly enjoyed spending time with his friends and family. "Big John" as he was fondly referred to by many, was very charismatic and fun to be around. He was an avid sports fan who especially enjoyed watching the Oakland Raiders and the Golden State Warriors. John liked playing cards especially Sheepshead and Cribbage and was involved with Cribbage clubs. He also enjoyed golfing. John is survived by his sister: Beverly (Roy) Fiegel of Wisconsin Rapids; brothers: Melvin (Mary Jo) Howard of Chicago, IL and Jim (Marianne) Howard of Wisconsin Rapids; nieces and nephews: Susan (Charles Cook) Fiegel, Mark (Christine Palazzari) Fiegel, David Fiegel, Gregory (Heather) Howard, Elizabeth Howard (Kenneth) Phillips and Jeffery (Christina) Howard as well as several great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Orbery, mother Margaret and step-father Clifford Dolan. A private family service will be held. A celebration of John's life will be held at a later date.
