Obituary of Helen Murtfeldt

Helen S. Murtfeldt, 99, of the Renaissance in Wisconsin Rapids, died peacefully at the Edgewater Haven Nursing Home in Port Edwards, on March 5, 2013. A memorial service celebrating Helen's life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 8, 2013 at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 311 2nd St. S., Wisconsin Rapids, WI 54494. The Rev. Veldman will preside. Visitation will be held for 1 hour prior to the service at the church. Mrs. Murtfeldt was born on May 13, 1913 in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin to Louis and Isabelle (Demitz) Stahl. Helen married Lawrence Murtfeldt on June 17, 1937 in Wisconsin Rapids. They celebrated 70 years of marriage on June 17, 2007. He died on December 24, 2008. After high school graduation, Helen worked in the office at Consolidated Papers in Wisconsin Rapids. She was transferred to the corporate office in Chicago, Illinois where she worked for Walter Mead. At the time of their marriage, Larry was also employed by Consolidated Papers. His job was Superintendent of a logging camp in Hoveland, Minnesota. During their first year of married life in the north woods, Helen was the only woman in the camp. They had a dog named Buffy, half wolf, half Husky. She was a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood for 73 years and was an active member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Wisconsin Rapids. Helen is survived by three children; two daughters, Mary Hedin (Edward) of Las Vegas, Nev.; Patricia Barton (Thomas) of Austin, Tex.; one son, Robert (Kathryn), Los Gatos, Cal.; one sister, Lois Appel, Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.; five grandchildren, David Hedin (Tamara), Susan Olson (Kyle), John Barton (Tanya), William Barton (Lizz), and Eric Murtfeldt (Karen) and nine great-grandchildren. Arrangements are being handled by Herman-Taylor Funeral Home and Cremation Center. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Community Foundation of Greater South Wood County, 478 E.
