Obituary of Margaret Appel

Margaret Lois Appel, of Wisconsin Rapids, known by her friends and previous contemporaries as Lois, or by her nickname ?Speedy? passed away peacefully early Friday morning, November 22, 2013, at Renaissance Assisted Living. She was 97 years old. Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, November 26, 2013 at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Rev. John Grohs will officiate. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. until the time of services on Tuesday at the church. Lois was born June 11. 1916 in Wisconsin Rapids to Louis and Isabelle (Demitz) Stahl. She married Earl Appel on November 29, 1941 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Wisconsin Rapids. The couple was blessed with 64 years of marriage. Earl preceded her in death on July 1, 2006. Lois was very supportive of Earl during the years of World War II when he was serving is country as a member of the armed forces. During this time, Lois worked at Preway Inc. making parts for the war effort. She later worked as a secretary for Lincoln High School. Lois was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and its Ladies Aid. She was a great cook who was known for her delicious candy and Christmas cookies. She was a very social and giving person with a mischievous sense of humor. She loved her family and enjoyed watching her grandkids grow up. Lois liked to play bridge and enjoyed watching the Lawrence Welk show. She also had a love of music and enjoyed dances with her husband Earl. The couple especially liked to follow the Howie Sturtz Orchestra. Lois liked to travel and took many wonderful trips with the River Cities Bank New Horizons Club. Lois and Earl had a cottage on the Wisconsin River where they enjoyed many precious moments with family and boating. Lois is survived by three children: William (Kathy) Appel of Green Bay, Daniel (Mary) Appel of Key West, Florida, and Marilyn (Jerry) Knuth of Plover; three grandchildren: Andrew (Gina) Knuth of DePere, Chad (Jami) Knuth of Stevens Point, and Collin Knuth of Phoenix, Arizona; one great-grandson, Vincent Knuth; and nieces and nephews: Mary (Edward) Hedin, Patricia (Thomas) Barton, Robert (Kathy) Murtfeldt, Thomas (Dottie) Appel, Kathleen (Ben) Pease, James (Cindee) Appel, and Sara (Pat) Turbin. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Earl; sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Lawrence Murtfeldt; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Eldred and Edna Appel; and a niece Sue Anne (Don) Adams. The family has decided to not establish a memorial fund. Instead, the family requests that those wishing to make a memorial gift do so at a time of their choosing during this coming Christmas season, with memories and thoughts of Lois in mind, by making a contribution or extra contribution to a person in need or an organization serving those in need.
