Verlin was born December 15, 1924 in the Town of Sherry, Wood County, to James Thomas and Edna (Cutler) Mann. He graduated from Lincoln High School in Wisconsin Rapids in 1942 where he participated in high school boxing and running the mile in track. Verlin married Violet Doehr October 15, 1945 at St. John Lutheran Church in Auburndale. She preceded him in death November 25, 2009.
After high school he worked for Oscar Meyer, Pre-Way, and Roddis. He was a farmer and did custom farm work and custom butchering. Verlin met his partner in life Vi at Sherri-Land Ballroom. Their partnership was equal in every way. They were great dancers, they danced "In The Mood", "DarkTown Strutter Ball" and all the "Jitterbugs", sometimes 40 nights in a row at different venues. Their energy on the dance floor was so contagious that people would stop just to watch them. He taught his kids to dance in the barn and told his sons "Learn to dance and you will never be without a girl". When Verlin was not on the dance floor he enjoyed hunting and playing poker. Verlin accepted whatever life handed him. He took care of the love of his life for 29 years until her passing. Verlin was a dedicated family man, he loved them unconditionally and always came to their defense.
