Obituary of Leon Raymond Vytlacil

Leon R. Vytlacil, age 93, of Wisconsin Rapids, formerly of Mosinee, departed this world on Sunday, September 16, 2018, while in hospice care at the Atrium in Wisconsin Rapids.

Services will be at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Wisconsin Rapids on Thursday, September 20, 2018 at 11:00 A.M.  Father David Bruener will officiate. Full military honors will be conducted after the mass.  Burial will take place at St. Paul’s Parish Cemetery in Mosinee at a later date. Visitation will be held from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., with a Rosary Prayer Service taking place at 6:30 P.M. on Wednesday, September 19, 2018 at Herman-Taylor Funeral Home in Wisconsin Rapids.  Visitation will also take place at Herman-Taylor Funeral Home on Thursday, September 20, 2018 from 9:30 A.M. until 10:15 A.M. The family will proceed from the funeral home to the church at that time.

A native of Mosinee, WI, Leon was born on September 12, 1925 to Louis and Agnes (Burskey) Vytlacil. Leon was a veteran of World War II, having enlisted in the Army in 1943. He served in New Guinea and the Philippines. Leon earned the rank of sergeant by the time of his honorable discharge in 1946. After a couple of years at business school, Leon “Slim” settled in Wisconsin Rapids working for Consolidated Papers, Inc., for 40 years. In the final years of his career, he worked for Consolidated River Power Company on flowage management and land ownership matters and was up until recently, called on as an expert to provide testimony on legal matters pertaining to that work. After retiring in 1988, Leon was a volunteer tax preparer at the Lowell Center for many years.

In his leisure time, Leon enjoyed fishing, deer hunting, bowling, a some-what futile effort at golf and most of all his life-long passions of cheering on the Packers and spending time with his family. Leon loved to drive and still made long journeys from his home in Rapids, down to his son’s home in South Carolina, as recently as his 92nd birthday. He will be remembered as a loving, proud, and generous husband, father, uncle, and friend; as well as, a consummate professional by his colleagues.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jean (Leidiger) Vytlacil; his cherished parents, Louis and Agnes Vytlacil; and his youngest brother, Leonard “Lenny” Vytlacil. He will join Jean and his parents in perpetual memory at St. Paul’s Parish Cemetery. Leon is survived by his sons, David and Gordon; and his siblings: Mim, Bob, and Anne. He will be remembered fondly as “Uncle Sonny” by his nieces and nephews.
