Obituary of Walter L. Scholl

Walter Laverne Scholl, age 76 passed away on Tuesday, March 24, 2015 at his residence. Services will be at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, March 30, 2015 at Saratoga Moravian Church in Saratoga. Rev. Olaf Anderson will officiate. Burial will be held at Pioneer Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Sunday, March 29 at Herman-Taylor Funeral Home and from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service at the church. Walter was born on February 21, 1939 in Bear Valley, Wisconsin to Laverne and Dorothy (Stoltz) Scholl. He graduated from Baraboo High School in 1958. Wally joined the Navy Reserves in 1957 and served his country for six years. He was assigned to the US Soley, DD707 and in the two years of active duty he cruised the Red Sea, Mediterranean Sea and was also in the Cuban Missile crisis. Wally was a gravel truck driver for DuBois and Sons of Baraboo, WI after being discharged from the Navy in 1963. In 1964, he went to work for Pagel Construction of Almond, WI as a bulldozer operator. In 1965 he joined the Operating Engineers Union, Local 139 working thru them for various contractors until his retirement in 2001. He did serve on the Board of Trustees for the Operating Engineers as well. Wally's talent was used on such projects as the I-90/I-94 highway system, I-39 highway, the Jim Falls Hydroelectric plant and during the last five years of his employment he helped to build golf courses. Wally truly loved his work. Walter married Barbara Anderson on February 8, 1964 in New Lisbon, WI. They resided in Baraboo until 1965 when they moved to Wisconsin Rapids in 1967, and have lived there ever since. Wally was especially proud of his family and was always there for them. Wally had many interests, he was an avid collector of construction equipment toys, antique farm tractors and engines and implements. He loved to exhibit his collections at various shows around the state culminating with a display at last year's Farm Progress Days in Plover, WI. Wally also loved fishing with his brothers on the Mississippi River. His most recent interest was in ATV riding and he was instrumental in organizing the Saratoga ATV-UTV Riders Club two years ago. Wally is survived by his wife Barbara; three children: William Walter (Janet Hicks) of Nekoosa, WI, Jefferey Michael (Jeri Lee Kuehl) of Neenah ,WI, and Wendy Ann Stratton (special friend Jason Manley) of Eugene, OR; seven grandchildren: Zachery William (Shauna Peterson) and Lindsey (fiancé Cody Holden) of Nekoosa, WI, Cory Heid of Kaukana, WI, Jacob Scholl of Neenah, WI, Joshua Rowland of Lynchberg, VA , Allison and Brittney Stratton of Nekoosa, WI; great-grandchildren: Croix Zachary and Emma Melissa Scholl of Nekoosa,WI ; two brothers: Kenneth (Eileen) of Pickett, WI and Marvin Scholl of Fond du Lac, WI; sisters-in-law : Shirley Moore and Margorie Adkins. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Mary Klemm, brother-in-law Mike Klemm, sister Jeanette Chesney ; two brothers: Gerald and Robert Scholl and sister-in-law Sharon Scholl, brother-in-law James L. Moore. In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to the UW Cancer Center or a charity of your choice. Our thanks to the church family at the Saratoga Moravian Church were Wally has been a member for 36 years.
